Act 3, Scene 1: It's Like a Science Fair, But Not!

Setting: We are outside, on Juliana, the Island. There's a rock cliff with a waterfall on the left side, a few wooden sheds, palm trees in the background. The waterfall feeds a kind of water wheel with an axle that has a sort of crude generator hooked up to it. There are two cables with clamps attached to it like on a car starter cable. It also has a brake lever that can be pulled to release the brake. Next to it is a little platform where further equipment can be placed. There's a hand made wooden table on the right side with some chemical laboratory equipment on it. There's a little burner, bubbling liquids, beakers full of solids and liquids, and a chalkboard with the slogan "A great day for science!" and a table with two columns, "success" and "failure". There's like 25 marks on the "failure" side and none of the "success side". Also on the edge of the table is a box with a big red launch button.

%ACT% Borax the chemist, is chemically working on chemicals in the beakers and test tubes at the table at [2, 2nd]. He's wearing a lab coat, and a face shield, which is tilted up.

%ACT% Thomas comes in from [7, 2nd], also wearing a labcoat, carrying a very large, steampunk looking voltage gauge.

%ACT% Thomas groans and puts the voltage gauge onto the little platform.

Thomas (Uwu, notices Borax): "Oh, hi Borax! I thought I would be the only one out here today!"

Borax: "Yeah, heh, I need to do some tests, and unlike my roof, the sky doesn't burn! Ask me how I know ..."

%HND% A sudden burst of foam shoots from the bubbling liquids in one of the test tubes on his table.

%SND% SND-3100 - Foam

Borax: "YIKES!"

%ACT% Borax and Thomas make a little jump away from the table.

Thomas: "Eh, yeah, I think I know what you mean. What are you working on today?"

Borax: "Random assignment of the day! Two weeks ago it was combustion engines. Then last week that turned into battery-powered cars. I told Mr. Arkenstone that we don't even have batteries yet, but Mr. Smartass CEO won't listen. We'd just managed a potato battery when you-know-who storms in, and we're like, oh shit, what is it this time, and he's like, Borax, I need you to build me a rocket. I'm like sure, you want fries with that, and he's like, no, it's important, I need a rocket so we can catch lightning. I say, like, sure, why not go to mars, too, and he's like, there's no mars in this universe shut up and get to work so here I am."

Thomas: "Uhm okay. Well, at least this world already has gunpowder."

Borax: "Yeah, if you don't mind the war between North and South Delandroc, where most of that stuff is going right now. The only stuff you can get is from New Ido, and that's like half charcoal, half horse dung or something. So I've got to come up with something better. But I think I'm about to make a breakthrough! Stand back please."

%ACT% Thomas stands back. WAY back.

Thomas: "Uhm ... if that was your first success, I'm glad I wasn't here for the failures."

Borax: "Yeah, did you come across the big crater on your way up here?"

Thomas: "Yeah!"

Borax: "That ... uhm ... that's actually not supposed to be there. That was me."

Thomas: "Ooops."

Borax: "Yeah, big ooops. I'm sure distilling nitrates from manure was a step in the right direction, but maybe I should have tried it at a smaller scale. Anyways ... what kind of science are you doing today?"

Thomas: "I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER ASK! Not QUITE trying to catch lightning yet, but more like, trying to make some by myself and store it for later! BEHOLD!"

%ACT% Thomas picks up a large, cloth covered object (capacitor) and puts it on the table.

Thomas: "TA-DAAAAAA!"

%ACT% Thomas pulls the cloth off with flourish, revealing a giant replica of the shell of a 4700µF Nichicon electrolytic capacitor.

Borax: "Congratulations, you made the worlds clunkiest capacitor!"

Thomas: "All materials are substituted with some crude shit, but at least none of it is horse dung."

Borax: "Okay, it sure looks the part, but does it also work?"

Thomas: "I don't know. Let's find out!"

Thomas: "Oh man, I love this place."

Borax: "Yeah, it's like the happiest labor camp on earth."

Thomas: "I don't find it that bad."

Borax: "I had three friends who worked for Arkenstone in the Real World. Two had complete nervous breakdowns and the third quit to become a monk in Tibet. And when my ARK50 EV blew up, his company voided my warranty."

Thomas: "Your car just...blew up?"

Borax: "I may have fiddled with the engine a little...but I made it better!"

Thomas: "Except for the blowing-up part."

Borax: "Details."

Thomas: "Well, don't fiddle with my capacitors, then. These will be great for creating a power grid here."

%ACT% Borax pauses to give Thomas a look.

Borax: "What's your trust level again?"

%ACT% Thomas shows Borax the color coded wristband level 5 he is wearing.

Thomas: "Level five."

Borax: "Hah! Be glad for everything you don't have to know yet."

%ACT% Borax shows his own color coded wristband level 15.

Borax: "I'm at Level 15, and I know stuff I wish I didn't. Though it's great to work on tech again. Sometimes I feel like my old self except for this weird body I'm in."

Thomas: "I've grown used to it. It's a lot younger than my old self. Better knees for one thing!"

Borax: "Watch out-- those animal instincts can kick in hard. And sooner than you know, you're acting like one of them. It's hard to stay human under these conditions."

Thomas: "Come on, it's not like you'll suddenly start using kitty litter."

Borax: "No, but the longer I'm here, the more I'm no longer myself. I hope we'll find a way back before I'm completely gone."

Thomas: "Is that what they're working on in the main building?"

Borax: "I'm not allowed to tell ya. Not before you're at least Level 10. But don't worry, you'll find out soon enough. You're doing good work, won't be long until they level you up."

Thomas: "Working on it. It just feels a little bit weird re-inventing the wheel, and not even knowing what it's for."

%MIX% Pan: ON

Borax: "You gotta earn yourself the trust of the Chief Executive Bastard first."

Thomas: "I know. Better get that capacitor working. Everything around here seems to be about electromagnetism."

Thomas: "Whoa, what?"

%ACT% Borax steps out of the way.

%ACT% Cassandra runs into Thomas, nearly toppling him over.

Cassandra: "Thomas! You've got to get out of here! There are evil things going on on this island! The Order is bringing people here to do something with them! Something horrible! I saw mass graves full of bodies! Burned! Twisted!"

Thomas: "What on earth are you doing here?"

Thomas: "Best Friend. Actually, more than that. And, no, I don't know what she's doing here."

%ACT% Borax looks to where she was taken away, looking and sounding a little forelorn.

Borax: "Guess she wanted to tell you that she still loves you..."

%ACT% Thomas sounds thoughtful/regretful, then remembers what else she said.

Thomas: "Hmmm. But what was she talking about? Mass graves? What the actual fuck? Do you know what she meant?"

Borax: "Not below level 15!"

Thomas: "Don't play that game with me, Borax!"

Borax: "You just got yourself into deep shit, do you realize that? When Jeffrey finds out you told her where to find you, he's going to be pissed!"
