Act 3, Scene 2: The Loyal Puppy

Setting: Inside a prison. It's very dark. It's a bigger room that has been subdivided into three separate cells with iron bars. The back wall is made up of dark grey natural stones. The air is cold and dusty (some light haze), and the light coming through the window casts light rays through the dust. The left and right cells are 3m wide, the middle one is a single cell of 2m. All the light comes through a small, barred window in the middle of the back wall, higher up. There's a bed on the second level in each of the cells. The light shines from behind onto the middle one.

%ACT% Thomas sits in the middle of his cell at [4, 2nd], so that the light shine from the window lights him from behind. He's sitting upright, but staring at the floor in a hazy state of surrender. A light shine fog fills the cell, making the light more visible.

%ACT% Imeo, Victim2 and Victim3 are in the left part of the cell towards [7], huddled together on the single bed. Only Imeo is awake. They all look very sick and mentally absent.

Imeo: "Hey ... hey you! New one!"

Thomas (weak): "Hmm? Yeah?"

Imeo: "Wait ... you look familiar. Is that you Carl?"

Thomas: "*SIGH* I'm sorry. You're mistaking me for someone else. Name's Thomas."

Imeo: "Carl and I used to camp out together in the streets. Not the sharpest tool in the box, but he had a heart of gold. Nothing could ever ruin his mood. But one day he just disappeared. I wonder if this is where he ended up, just like us. I miss him, you know?"

Thomas: "I'm sure he's doing fine."

Imeo: "I hope so. Do you know what they're gonna do with us?"

Thomas: "Nothing good that's for sure."

Imeo: "So what's your deal?"

Thomas: "What?"

Imeo: "I mean ... what kinda lies did they tell YOU to lure you in?"

Thomas: "Not a lie ... but definitely not the whole truth either."

Imeo: "Told me, hey old bum, want to get off the street? Join the Order and we'll get you food and a place to sleep. Said, hell, why not, can't get any worse cannit? Boy was I wrong! Threw me in a hole. Told me I was worthless because I have no soul. What a load of bollocks."

Thomas: "Yeah. The old bait and switch. My situation was quite different ... but also kinda the same."

%ACT% Borax appears outside the window, you can only see the top of his head and his ears. He is clinging to the bars in the high window with both hands, grunting once in a while to show the effort this takes.

Borax (silent): "Hey, Thomas!"

%ACT% Thomas jumps to his feet and turns around facing the window.

Thomas: "Borax! What are you doing here?"

Borax: "There's something I wanted to tell you."

Thomas: "How to get out of here?"

Borax: "I'm afraid not."

Thomas: "Do you know what happened to Cassandra?"

Borax: "They took her away for questioning. She saw things she wasn't supposed to see."

Thomas: "The dead bodies?"

Borax: "*sigh* See this is why I came. I don't know a way out of this either. But I have to apologize."

Thomas: "What for?"

Borax: "For not being honest with you. And for using the number on my bracelet as an excuse to deny all responsibility. Your Cassandra was my wake-up call."

Thomas: "How so?"

Borax: "She sailed all the way across the ocean to a cursed island, because of how much she loves you. How can someone that courageous and passionate not have a soul?"

Thomas: "If only I hadn't been too blind to see it "

Borax: "You're in good company. I've been blinded by the cult. How it made me feel superior over the so-called "soulless creatures". Blinded by the prospect of building a human colony in a new world, a nostalgic bubble where everything is like it was. I had a lover here, too. His name was Avery. He was...is, a doctor."

Thomas: "What was he like?"

Borax: "Probably the best thing that ever happened to me here. Then the Order found me and convinced me to see him as a lesser being. After they brought me to their City of Lost Souls, I never saw him again. I never even told him I was leaving. Yesterday brought it all back. Now I'm wondering what if he's been trying to find me, just like Cassandra, but he didn't have a ship, or a crew, or the courage. What if he's just sitting home alone wondering what became of me? Worried or lost ... because of what I did to him?"

Thomas: "I don't know what to say ..."

Borax: "I need you to tell me two things. Do you regret what you did to her?"

Thomas: "Oh yes. Beyond words."

Borax: "Is there any force in the world that could make you hurt even a single hair on her, no matter how high the price?"

Thomas: "No. Nothing. I'd rather die. What kind of question is this?"

%ATT% Borax says the next lines passionately, almost desperately. Audience needs to know Borax is about to make a huge decision.

Borax: "I need to be one hundred percent sure that ... shit! It's Jeffrey! I gotta run!"

Jeffrey: "I don't have to tell that what you did yesterday was against the core principles of the Order, do I?"

Thomas: "No."

Jeffrey: "Good. According to the law, this makes you subject to capital punishment. I've been conferring with my advisory board, and what speaks against you is that the only way the intruder could have known where to find you was a breach of your oath of confidentiality. But what speaks for you is that you did not seem to have any intention for any of this to happen, or to harm our operations."

Thomas: "Cassandra? Where is she?"

Jeffrey: "In my personal care, doing well."

Thomas: "So then, what is your verdict?"

Jeffrey: "I don't think you deserve the death penalty just yet. You are among the best engineers on this island. I would hate to lose someone like you to the soulless void. But I also can't just pretend nothing happened. You will have to prove your loyalty, which will require a strong commitment. Are you ready for it?"

Thomas: "What if I'm not?"

Jeffrey: "Then there will be nothing more I can do for you."

Thomas: "Okay. I'll take the deal. What do I have to do?"

Jeffrey: "Come with me, I'll show you."
